Thank you for allowing your child to participate in our Minecraft study! In order to finalize participation, we ask that you please read through the following information, answer some simple questions, and digitally sign the forms at the end if you agree. This should take 5 minutes or less to complete.
What is this all about?
Your child is being asked to participate in a voluntary research study. The purpose of this study is to better understand to what extent they enjoy Minecraft, how they think about the game, and how it may be influencing the way they think about science. Participating in this study will involve playing on some specially designed Minecraft worlds that present concepts from Astronomy, Geology, and Engineering. We are writing to ask your permission to collect data on your child's activities in the camp/class, to administer surveys on the computer, capture screenshots and log files of their gameplay, assess their knowledge and/or attitudes, and to interview students about Minecraft. Your child's participation will last approximately 3-4 hours per day, for five days (times of the camp). There are no known risks to participation in this study, beyond those risks that exist during their normal academic activities. Benefits related to this research include learning new ways to think about Earth and other planets, and a potentially increased interest in science. Participation is fully voluntary and your child can withdraw from the research at any time. We currently have no alternative option to participating in the study, however you can check with Goldcrown staff to find out what other programs are being offered.
Why is your child being asked?
Your child is being asked to be a participant in a research study about the development of interest in science. The purpose of this research is to investigate how play of Minecraft with carefully designed educational content might impact the ways they think about science and how much interest they have in it. Your child has been asked to participate in this research because either they have signed up for this camp through the library. There will be approximately 10-12 participants at Goldcrown working with them, following all relevant organization rules at this location. Your child's participation in this research is voluntary. Your and your child's decision whether or not to participate will not affect your or your child's current or future dealings with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. If you decide your child can participate, you or your child are free to withdraw at any time without affecting that relationship.
What procedures are involved?
The study procedures involve playing Minecraft together, engaging in group work and discussion, completing surveys on a web browser, and being interviewed by researchers.
This research will be performed at Goldcrown as a normal part of the normal schedule. Camps will be held for 3-4 hours each day for a week, with time for breaks, snacks, and socializing.
What are the potential risks and discomforts?
There are no known risks beyond those normally associated with computer use and working in academic settings (remotely).
Are there benefits to participating in the research? Your child may learn more about basic concepts in Astronomy, Earth Science, Engineering, and also potentially become more interested in science overall.
What other options are there?
Your child has the option to not participate in this study and may withdraw at any time. Currently, we do not offer an alternative, although our partners may have other options available for your child. Please contact them should you have any questions. Will my child’s study-related information be kept confidential? We will use all reasonable efforts to keep your child’s personal information confidential, but we cannot guarantee absolute confidentiality. When this research is discussed or published, no one will know that your child was in the study. But, when required by law or university policy, identifying information (including your signed consent form) may be seen or copied by: a) The Institutional Review Board that approves research studies; b) The Office for Protection of Research Subjects and other university departments that oversee human subjects research; c) University and state auditors responsible for oversight of research; d) Federal regulatory agencies such as the Office of Human Research Protections in the Department of Health and Human Services; or e) The National Science Foundation, the funder of this research.
Will we be reimbursed for any expenses or paid for participation in this research?
You will not be offered payment for being in this study. Can my child withdraw or be removed from the study? If you and your child decide to participate, you are free to withdraw consent for your child and discontinue participation at any time. Your child can also choose to stop participating in the study. The researchers also have the right to stop your child’s participation in this study without your consent if they believe it is in your child’s best interests, you were to object to any future changes that may be made in the study plan, and/ or content provided to them. Will data collected from my child be used for any other research? Your child’s de-identified information could be used for future research without additional informed consent.
